The Spanish were indeed cruel in their treatment of the indigenous people in many circumstances. Where they any more cruel than other Europeans who butchered and/or enslaved the aboriginal peoples of the world? probably not. At the very least, the Spanish treated them like humans and wanted to save their souls. The English settlers in the other hand thought the native peoples to be savages.

That part of California is a desert and has very few trees for lumber. Adobe is perfect because its easy and quick to make but also because it was suited to its environment. It kept homes cool in the summer and insulated in the winter. Something the later wood constructions could not do. Is that what you call advanced?
