Assuming the Democrats mess everything up (this is purely
hypothetical), how can four years possibly match 40 years of
Republican rape? We have third parties, as most thinking people
know, and the Republicans really close to tumbleweed territory right
now? The party may very well be reshaped either Libertarians (real
ones) Greens, or independents being swept into office.
"40 years of Republican rape?"
How do you figure that?
The Republicans have controlled Congress only from 1995 to 2005; and as for the presidency, it’s been shared by both parties. Please, if you want to be taken seriously, leave the hyperbole out of it.

History repeats itself, and those who do not remember their history are doomed to repeat it.
Remember 1977-1980? I do…I lived through it.

Republicans are the third party now. They won’t win ANYTHING in 2010 or 2012.

Political Ether is what keeps shifting the generic blame from one major party to the other.
Citizens must elect more knowledgeable and qualified legislators. Voters can end this idle madness that undermines economic and social opportunities.
The presumption is that many potential voters respond to reactive prompts conditioned by "Factory Model" education. Admiral Rickover suggested that knowledge and skills are undermined by mediocre curriculum designed to inhibit critical thinking. This has been very effective for generations. Voters blindly follow party leader and media rhetoric.
Mainstream America is getting a better education in the new millineum. Accountability, integrity, and knowledge will identify candidates capable of managing complex dynamic challenges in real time situations. Standard traditional rhetoric will be history. Functional truth will be the order of the future elections.
Let’s move forward.

Been like that for 100 years. The Dems messed up, let’s try the Republicans. That didn’t work, I know, let’s see what the Dems can do. Well that was a mistake, maybe the Republicans will do better. Oh well, let’s give the Dems a chance. Hey, the Republicans are calling for reform, let’s try it. That was a disaster, but the Dems are promising hope and change, that may work this time.
And we Americans haven’t gotten any smarter, so we wil keep falling for it.

The "rape" of which you speak really started with Ronald Reagan and the complete capture of the GOP by Wall Street speculators, banking and financial institutions, and companies determined to form worldwide monopolies and oligopolies through mergers and leveraged buy-outs that eliminated the competition upon which the success of our economy has largely been based.
Before then, I often voted for Republicans. Did you know that Nixon proposed universal health care, for example? Since then, however, we have witnessed an exponential increase in the exportation of our industrial base along with our best jobs and a corresponding decrease in the purchasing power of all but the wealthiest Americans, whose wealth and control of the economy allow them to govern with more power and authority than since the early twentieth century..
Today corporatism (masking itself as conservatism) has taken over government. People who want to get government out of business have not been paying attention; our problem is how we get big business, big coal, big oil, and huge agribusinesses out of government.
I wish I could share with you your hope that other parties will be able to offer viable alternatives to our Democratic-Republican dominance. As long as (1) minorities are denied representation (unlike other countries, the US system is winner take all), and (2) our candidates are allowed to accept legal bribes in the form of campaign "contributions," third parties will remain on the fringe.
To address your question, Republicans have enjoyed incredible success not by proposing attractive policies but by attacking their opponents personally, spreading propaganda and misinformation (medical care under Obama would result in the government’s killing the elderly is popular right now), using wedge issues (Creationism), throwing out emotionally-charged words (socialism, communism, nazism), and validating the fears and prejudices especially of white American males). Why should they not expect these tactics to continue to enjoy success?
